Leather and Lace: Design Compromise for Couples

When you hear the two words, leather and lace,

your mind probably heads straight for the Stevie Nicks and Don Henley very romantic duet, which was masterfully written by the Fleetwood Mac sweetheart in 1981.

But sit tight, because...

I not only take this song to a different level, I attempt to make this song a hit all over again with my unusual choice to dissect the lyrics in a manner in which they relate a commonplace struggle couples have – deciding how to put their homes together amicably. Although both the melody and the words like “You in the moonlight with your sleepy eyes…could you ever love a man like me?” are capable of making any heart melt, my main goal is to help couples avoid having a meltdown with my newly remastered version of Leather and Lace.

Whether you're talking "my city, your mountain"

or leather and lace, there will be a time when couples simply need to learn how to compromise, communicate and demonstrate their true compassion for each other. When couples are preparing for the blending of two households, there's just no escaping all that yin and yang. Fortunately, I’ve collected some really helpful advice specific to this topic.

Over my career, I explain how I’ve been able to narrow a list down to five types of couples ranging from those who have exactly the same design tastes to those who plain do not agree on anything, period. Plus, I take the time to describe everything in between.

I also reinforce the importance of editing belongings before signing on the dotted line for, likely, the biggest merger of one's lifetime.

Have no fear! I spell out some tried and true tips that are super easy to follow. Then, if all else fails, I embrace my Behavioral Science degree and lay down some hard and fast rules that, ultimately, result in a good, healthy mix of each other's style.

Check out how I managed to soften the look of this, otherwise, masculine industrial living room.

This is, hands down, my favorite pendant. In fact, I’ve used this little darling in a recent modern farmhouse build of my own. It actually casts lace-like shadows to the floor. The set of chairs also offer plenty of feminine curve appeal, but I purposely keep the fabric more on the masculine side. By adding a little fringe here and there along with some dreamy, creamy drapes I was able to strike the perfect balance. Can you picture this room in complete darkness with nothing but the light from the fireplace and the crystal pendants turned way down low? Sounds pretty cozy and romantic to me. You, too?

Leather and Lace - Stevie Nicks

It’s true, Stevie’s and Don’s romantic relationship may have been short-lived, but their friendship has been longterm. I am so thankful for their continued willingness to perform this beautiful love song together.

Thank you, you two…you’ll be forever lovebirds in my mind!
