Black and White Lake House Bedroom

In an earlier GENRE post, I included a nursery, since babies are in the SPRING of their lives. This month, I’m back at it dreamin’ up a bedroom design for someone special who’s just starting the SUMMER years of his life! High school graduation has come and gone, and now it’s time for Owen to sail into uncharted waters. Need not worry about this guy…this passionate young man, with compass in hand, is equipped for the navigation ahead.

Owen’s family owns a camp located on Lake Champlain’s Thompson’s Point in Charlotte, Vermont.

While visiting with his “Granny”, I’ve been so lucky to have experienced this very peaceful spot for myself. Built in the early 1900s, this place embraces so much vintage lake charm, including four rustic bedrooms, a large open porch overlooking the lake and all the original decor left behind by its former owner, Carl. Even though Carl has been gone for many years, I’ve been told he still lets his presence be known.

I remember from quite a while back, a family member had a desire to paint the untouched natural shiplap white. I guess the proposal must have been voted out by the family council. Although, I never lost sight of the vision. I thought it could be a crisp, clean change-up for this, otherwise dark, but very cozy camp. All due respect to the family for their initial reservations, cuz it’s a REALLY bold step. Once you start, there’s really no turning back to restore this nice old place to its former grandeur-at least not without a lot of blood, sweat and tears. SO, my big takeaway here is: just be sure you’ll be happy with it for the duration.

Moving on with the accent pieces and colors…it was a no-brainer to choose masculine black and other natural elements. By choosing different variations of whites and textures, the room holds the eye’s interest and will be a comfortable retreat for Owen after spending exhausting days on the lake searching for the legendary lake monster, Champ. Adding in the black and white Lake Champlain map, compass pillow and rustic wooden oar clearly states this is where the Captain hangs his hat. Spilling white paint to the floor is okay, but I think using a heavily distressed finish is key to keeping true to this camp’s wonderful old age.

While interviewing Owen, I learned he’s quite a well-rounded individual…

loving woodworking, metal work and sports. He’s also heading for a different shore, Boston’s Wentworth Institute of Technology, to study Industrial Design. That’s far from the end of his story, though…Owen recently had an opportunity to buy a boat trailer…no big deal until you realize a FREE cabin cruiser was part of this sweet deal! Having been surrounded by a family of boat-lovers, he said, “I wanted a summer project to work on”, something of his own. Along with a newly obtained boating license and a very nice girlfriend by his side, he’s planning on spending plenty of time at the lake!

Owen

Best of luck, Owen, as you’re “on your way to a world that others might have missed…ride, Captain, ride upon your mystery ship”! Make sure to take in this tune dedicated to the design and, of course,
