An Eclectic Approach to Music, Design, and Life

Straight out of the gate, you’ll detect I’m especially passionate about this topic. I begin with drawing a parallel between the way I’ve led my life and experimental gardening.

I live my life like an experiment…you gotta try new things, and that absolutely includes giving all kinds of music a fair shake.

So, be prepared to hang on to your earbuds, because this episode features more music discussion than any other previous track!

If you’re a returning listener to Deep Track Designs, you may recall how I started listening to all kinds of records at an early age. I explain how I moved from loving rock to swiftly adopting an appreciation for classical in a matter of just a few years, all thanks to an older brother who I clearly adore.

My co-host and I banter back and forth about the way our musical backgrounds developed – in many cases, simultaneously.

The undeniable connection between us makes for a delightfully entertaining exchange of music trivia and laughter. Our eclectic tastes in music, like a hummingbird dipping from one flower to the next, covers tremendous territory.

We bop from country to disco, soft rock, pop rock, blues rock, crossovers, and, finally, to one of my favorite eclectic music artists, Paul McCartney.

As always, I select a theme song to go with each episode. I like how my favorite Paul McCartney and Wings tune, Bluebird, fits.

I believe the gentle song lends to being free to do what you like, whatever it may be. Isn’t that what eclecticism is all about anyway?

For a moment or two, I admit to getting caught up in Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. I explains how I was nearly brought to my knees while Ed Sheeran sang Perfect to the Queen.

Of course, this episode couldn’t rock n’ roll on by without mentioning Paul’s being knighted by Her Majesty in 1997.

I need to warn you - pulling an eclectic design together can be tricky.

That’s why I highlight some basic, less strict rules:  mixing the old with the new, choosing mismatched furniture, blending styles, using plenty of contrasting textures, and adding a few exceptional, standout pieces. I also offer a few tips for maintaining a more unified look and relaxing the eye.

Finally, I share the story of my eclectic approach to education, careers, and adventure.

You’ll be surprised to learn what I first studied after high school; listen to the end of this special track to find out!
